GirlCrew is a global social network for women, designed to help women connect and make friends around their hectic daily lives today, both socially and professionally. Founded by an Irish women, Elva Carri as a Facebook group page, and co-founders Pamela Newenham and Áine Mulloy, the social network has experienced substantial growth with communities now spanning across the globe to the United States, Canada, Austrailia, the UK and Ireland, boasting a membership of 50,000 women and counting, across 46 cities! Whether it's a night out on the town, an evening for Netflix and chill, or hiking, GirlCrew organises it all for you! Women simply join online for free, join a group and introduce themselves and post or reply to other members events suggestions. Not only does GirlCrew facilitate social events, it also organises events around entrepreneurship and careers, where women in business can meet and network. For example, GirlCrew Pro is run in conjunction with Microsoft Ireland and is their most popular event. These career events aim to help women advance in their careers, land their dream job or establish their own business. Some popular guest speakers at events run in the past include head of Google Ireland Fionnuala Meehan and celebrity chef, cook book author and entrpreneur Domini Kemp. During the Web Summit 2014, Girl Crew organised an offshoot group called the 'WOW Crew', joining crew members working in tech together as a women-in-tech power group. The Crew has organised professional career seminars for women, makeup masterclasses and secret shopping parties around the country.
In March 2016, myself and some other college classmates interviewed the co-founder Pamela Newenham as part of another college project. Pamela was a business journalist with The Irish Times up until September 2016, specializing in the areas of technology, innovation, start-ups and entrepreneurship where she has since devoted her career completely to further developing GirlCrew globally. When we interviewed Newenham, she had just returned from a trip to Silicon Valley where she and her colleagues were invited by Facebook to celebrate GirlCrew's success with Mark Zuckerburg and the Facebook team. Newenham emphasised the importance of pursuing an idea and to be daring. "Just Do It- Stop Talking About It- Just Do It!.like the NIKE Logo" As quoted by Newenham in another interview with Irish Tech News, demonstrating her drive and encouragement to 'get up and go!'. Newenham has successfully leveraged her expertise and experience in entrepreneurship and technology to help grow GirlCrew into a global social network. Newenham has since relocated to the States to pursue her mission of further worldwide expansion along with the other GirlCrew squad members, we wish them all the best in their conquest!
